Poker offers a rich and varied way to gamble and play card games. You can play for just a bit of fun to win a few buttons or you can take it to a very serious level against ultra-competitive players where the rewards are much higher.

But, the more money you want to try to win when playing poker, the more serious you’re going to have to take the game. If not, you’re going to quickly find you will be losing money, and lots of it.

So, if you want to play online casino games of poker for sizeable pots, here are a few dos and don’ts you should know:

DO:

1Know the rules. If you don’t know the rules of the poker game you’re playing, whether it’s Texas Holdem or Caribbean Stud, then you’re quickly going to find yourself out of pocket. And if you have to keep asking whether you’re playing Limit or No Limit, it’s going to lead to plenty of frustration.

2Be patient. There is a great temptation when you’re playing poker, especially online, to play every hand because you want to stay involved in the game. But the odds on you winning every hand are not in your favour. So choose carefully about which hands you’re going to play. If not, the other players will quickly pick up on the fact you’re playing loose.

3Know the odds. You can easily find out the odds of you winning a hand with a certain combination. Use this to guide your betting decisions.

4Be aware of your seat position. Where you’re sat at the table has a huge influence on your prospects of success. The best position to sit is in the button or dealer position as this means you will play last in each turn and so you know how everyone else has bet. The small blind position is the worst on the table as everyone else is still to play, so you’ll need a very strong hand to play from here.

5Take note of your opponents. Watching how the other players act and bet during a game can give you the chance to get a step ahead as you can work out when you can take advantage of their loose play.

DON’T

1Splash your chips. It may seem like a cool thing to do to just throw your chips into the pot on the table, but it’s not. It means the dealer can’t be certain if you have put the right amount in for your bet or raise.

2Check with good hands. If you have a good starting hand, then play it, and don’t be afraid to be aggressive with it either.

3Get emotional. Remember that you’re competing against other people to win money and your opponents will try to unsettle you. Stay calm and take a breath if you think you’re going to make a hasty decision.

4Chase your losses. The only thing that comes from chasing your losses is more losses.

5Bluff constantly. If you continually try to bluff your way to winning hands, you will quickly be found out and that means when you want to genuinely bluff, you will miss out on a good opportunity. Still, there are times when you can get great satisfaction from bluffing!
